Otherwise you've got to add Clockpunk, Aetherpunk, Geopunk, etc. - lines get fuzzy.

Think of it this way Steampunk is more towards the Civil war in america- and the industrial revolution. That stuff. Contrast the Civil war to WWI and WWII. Steampunk is more leather, Diesel punk is Cotton, Cyberpunk is neon-ish.

Watch timelines. I saw the end of the Steam Locomotives, but operated and maintained Nuclear Submarine Enginerooms

I've been told 'Steampunk' is a catch-all for prior-current tech-aesthetic. That mean it also includes Rockpunk (Flintstones!)

The Outcast:
dieselpunk is based more around a alternative 50s era, while steampunk is around the 1800 century during the victorian times

I'd say that the real age of steam does have a much better aesthetic than a lot of steampunk, and i've not seen much by way of dieselpunk. I personally find figuring out contraptions from either era a lot of fun, though I'm bogged down in making it realist

I'm not sure you can compare which is better - it's an aesthetic, which can be realised well or realised poorly. Beyond that it's merely taste...

I've heard Steampunk is the age of Steam- 1837-1910 (Victorian to Edwardian era) and Diesel Punk is WWI and II era. Vietnam and now are just- current- then 2100 is Cyberpunk. All are very different in fact. Clothing styles are very different.

I think that the innumerable varieties of "***"-punk are various expressions of a global conspiracy by artists to create & sustain compelling aesthetic alternatives to the mass market.

if steampunk is giant mechanical confederate spiders, then deiselpunk is giant mechanical veitcong spiders.

I agree with the Magician. I, myself, find the Steampunk Aesthetic to be more pleasing but I wouldn't even considering arguing that it was in any way "superior."
