Detect URLs in posts and make them target="_blank" links (you'd have to stop post text from being a link to do this)

Re-write the whole thing using AJAX so that it pre-emptively loads child nodes, and doesn't require a full screen refresh just to see what comes next

Maybe when people log in they should first be directed to their bookmarks page - to encourage them to check up on the posts that interest them, rather than the top level ones
